They grow up so fast – Dzhalil + Louie at ILCAMS day

Quick post to acknowledge the great work Dzhalil and Louie “Lewis” did in their first presentations to the institute.

Dzhalil delivered the best talk of the day, which was made even more impressive by being located in the imposing setting of the Yoko Ono Auditorium. He talked through his project looking for a cure for aniridia in a way that the diverse audience in the room could understand, “You would be upset if you got just half your pizza, well cells get upset when they get half the amount of a protein”. I will be stealing this for all future haploinsufficiency talks! Especially just before lunch.

Lewis presented his PhD work in poster format, and got some very useful discussion around future work and problem solving. Here he is looking suitably proud / confused.

In the interests of completeness… I also gave a talk. I used this as an opportunity to showcase the work of Natasha Chavda and Andrea Conway, including some of the data from our time at Janelia advanced imaging centre, and superres imaging at UoL. Clearly the organisers didn’t appreciate just how awesome Natasha’s data are, so my presentation was relegated to a much more standard lecture theatre. Harsh but certainly less intimidating.
