Outreach – Meet the Scientists at the World Museum

A lively Saturday at the World Museum

This Saturday members of the different groups of our Department of Eye and Vision Science joined the University of Liverpool’s “Meet the Scientists” event in the heart of Liverpool’s World Museum. Families streamed in to see what happens when researchers open the door to real science. Our stand, themed around the magic of eyes, quickly became a hub of curiosity and discovery.

Hands-on eye science for all ages

Visitors of all ages rolled up their sleeves to dissect pig eyes under guidance from our postdocs, PhD students and technical team. Everyone had a turn trying on specially modified glasses that mimic conditions like myopia, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. We also introduced the world of hydrogels for regenerative medicine and shared exciting recent research into a new chemical cross-linking treatment for keratoconus being developed in Liverpool.

Bringing art into optics

For younger scientists we set up a crafty corner where they could decorate polystyrene eyeballs with coloured markers… we anticipate these will go into action for Halloween next week.

Reflecting on community and science

Throughout the day kids and parents were buzzing with questions. Our team of helpers went home tired but happy, reminded why public engagement matters so much.

I love these sorts of thing; giving back to the community in this way is as rewarding for us as it is inspiring for visitors. We’ve done lots of “Meet the Scientists” over the years and they are always a fun time. We can’t wait for the next chance to share the wonder of vision science with Liverpool.
